Summer Painting Tips: A Placer County Homeowner's Guide to Getting It Right

Summer is by far the busiest painting season in Placer County. Long daylight hours, low humidity, and predictable weather make it easier to prep, paint, and cure both interior and exterior finishes. But summer heat also brings challenges that can affect how well a paint job turns out.

Whether you're hiring a professional or tackling a room yourself, these tips will help your summer project look better and last longer.

Time the Work Around the Heat

Painting a wall that's baking in 100-degree sun is a recipe for flashing, poor adhesion, and premature failure. Exterior paint should generally be applied when the surface temperature is within the range printed on the can — usually below 90°F for most modern coatings. Experienced painters will "chase the shade," working on the east side of the house in the afternoon and the west side in the morning. If you're painting yourself, start early and stop before the wall gets direct afternoon sun.

Don't Skip the Prep

Summer heat can make prep tempting to rush, but the finish quality depends on what happens before the first coat. For exteriors that usually means:

  • Washing off dust, pollen, and cobwebs
  • Scraping any loose or peeling paint
  • Sanding rough edges smooth
  • Re-caulking failed joints around trim, windows, and doors
  • Spot-priming bare wood, stucco patches, or stained areas
  • Masking windows, fixtures, and hardscape
  • Covering plants that can't be moved

For interior work, prep includes patching nail holes and dents, sanding patches flush, cleaning greasy areas (especially in kitchens), and protecting floors and furniture. A professional estimate should explain exactly which prep steps are included.

Choose Colors in Real Light

California summer light is bright and warm, and it changes throughout the day. Colors that look great on a small chip inside a store can shift dramatically on a full wall outside. Buy sample pots, paint 2-foot squares in a few spots on your house, and check them in morning, midday, and late-afternoon light before deciding. For interiors, do the same on more than one wall — north- and south-facing rooms read very differently.

Pick the Right Sheen for the Room

Paint sheen affects durability, cleanability, and how much it shows imperfections:

  • Flat / matte — softens wall flaws, good for bedrooms and ceilings
  • Eggshell — a common all-purpose interior finish
  • Satin — more washable, good for hallways, kids' rooms, family rooms
  • Semi-gloss — durable, cleanable, common on trim, doors, cabinets

Protect Landscaping and Concrete

Summer paint drops can bake into concrete driveways, walkways, and patios if they aren't covered or cleaned up quickly. Drop cloths, plastic sheeting, and painter's tape aren't just for the walls — they protect everything below. If you're hiring, ask how they protect landscaping and hardscape during the project.

Ventilate Interior Work

Modern paints are lower in odor than they used to be, but interior work still needs airflow. Open windows on opposite sides of the room, run ceiling fans, and give coats real drying time before moving furniture back or hanging art.

Book Painters Early in the Season

Reputable Placer County painters fill their summer schedules quickly. If you know you want work done between July and September, reach out at least a few weeks ahead. Booking early also gives you room to schedule the exterior work around vacation plans, family visits, and back-to-school.

Know When to Hire vs. DIY

A small bedroom or an accent wall can be a reasonable DIY project. Full exteriors, two-story homes, kitchens with cabinet refinishing, extensive drywall repair, or projects on a deadline are usually better handled by professionals — both for safety on ladders and for finish quality on large surfaces.
